CASE STUDY

Yogaworks App Redesign

Landing-Page-Image

This is a side project I was working on for fun, and I am not affiliated with YogaWorks.

YogaWorks is one of the largest providers of yoga instruction in the United States. There are more than 50 studios across the country and have a growing online audience due to the current COVID-19 crisis. I decided to redesign their app to enhance its usability and make it more visually cohesive to the website.

DESIGN QUESTION

How might we make the Yogaworks app more visually cohesive and engaging for users?

Problems

• Does not match the current style of the YogaWorks website
• Has low contrast which makes it hard to read
• Doesn't have much content or ways to engage
• Navigation menu is overwhelming with options and often the links take you to a web browser
• Not much else to do but look for classes in a given location and time

Goals

• Improve the usability of the mobile app with design elements from the web app
• Provide inspiration to get users motivated to do yoga
• Allows users to connect with others through the app
• Highlight content that shows more of an explanation of what type of yoga is offered

02 RESEARCH

Competitive Analysis

I created a visual competitive analysis matrix to view the findings more clearly. Green indicates a positive observation, orange is neutral, and red is negative. Yogaworks doesn't have many direct competitors that are studio-based, yoga mobile apps. However, there are a handful of companies that are providing yoga services online.

03 RESEARCH

Survey Results

I ran a quick survey to get some ideas about a yoga mobile app from real yoga users. The six respondents were all females and ranging from age 18-32.

83%

of respondents would expect and/or want to use a yoga app to register for classes.

100%

would expect and/or want to watch livestream routines to practice yoga.

50%

would expect and/or want to connect with others on the app.

68%

would expect and/or want to see what classes are most popular.

100%

would expect and/or want to find yoga inspiration on the app.

83%

would expect and/or want to see progress in their yoga practice.

Prototype & Validate

I conducted a usability test with a target users via Zoom and InVision for their feedback on the designs. You can view the InVision link here.

Task 1: 3/3 users completed

Create an account and view yoga classes that interest you.

Task 2: 3/3 users completed

Book a Hatha Yoga class for a beginner level class.

Task 3: 3/3 users completed

Find out when your classes for the week are scheduled.

Takeaways

• Users did not immediately know what the social media section was
• The save button looked like it could be a way to book a class
• Users wanted to see what classes their friends also liked to gain some inspiration

04 DESIGN

Iteration Based on Feedback

Feedback-Iteration-1

Changed the social media page title from "@Yogaworks" to "YogaWorks on Instagram"

Feedback-Iteration-2

Changed the bookmark icon to a heart to clearly indicate that this button is for saving classes.

feedback3

Made the saved classes on friend's profiles public for users to get additional yoga inspiration.

Takeaways

This was my first time completing a mobile-first design project, and I loved it. I realized that designing for mobile-first really helps you focus on content and simplicity. I also really enjoyed working with the current style that was used on the YogaWorks website. For my next steps, I’d love to continue refining the interactions in the app to make it more user friendly and engaging
